You're fighting bass guitar on one end and cymbals and stuff on the other. My experience onstage with 30+ watt 6L6 amps has been that they sometimes can be super loud but you still can't hear them. I guess the circuit does matter more than tubes. It's subtle, less of a difference than i expected. I'm not sure this is even good, i'd like to hear it on a gig though. I don't necessarily think there's more headroom with the 6L6s, but i do think there's more bass and a different kind of high end response. Illusions, delusions, any kind of lusion. I know i'll get the normal "buy a vibrolux" suggestion, but i've played through a few vibrolux reissues and didn't think they sounded as good as this. What are the suggestions? Should i use the amp this way or am i headed for trouble? It really sounds good, especially because i have a 2x10 baffle in there with british voiced speakers. 6.5vac at all tube heaters (between wires), 416vdc coming off rectifier measured from chassis, and 175vdc on V1, V2 etc.Īnd below is a photo of the power and rec tubes still on after being cranked for close to two hours. I also took some measurements at this time…. cab and played with the amp volume on 10 for another hour, attenuated.Īt the end of that i felt the power transformer and here's the result…i could touch the side of it for about 3-4 seconds, and the top i could touch for 5-6 seconds before too much heat pain. I did crank it up and play for about 45 minutes loud, and when my ears started hurting i ran the speaker out into my badcat unleash and then an ext. I didn't change the bias of the 6L6s yet, they were last at around 35mA. Okay, i spent a few more hours with it today. Would love to hear some recommendations for this tube though. Way bigger difference than small bias adjustment or PI change. I also wanted to hear a 12at7 in v2 (first tube of vibrato channel). Seems that they are the same thing anyway.
I "think" i preferred that over the Groove Tube labeled 12at7 that was in there, but it was so similar it was hard to really tell. I was only on about 3 on the DRRI volume knob.Īlso, just for fun i tried a couple different tubes in the PI and settled on a JJ ECC81. I just played a bit, then let it settle, played a bit, etc. Also, i hadn't thought about the fact that the bias reading would jump around while i played, but i guess that makes sense. Under or over that window sounded bad (distorted in a bad way) to me. But my further thought is that between about 16 and 24 i didn't notice a drastic difference. What i noticed is that the amp seemed to sound good at around 20mA which is what "blue strat" recommended. I did check the bias while playing guitar and listening, as far as i can tell i didn't mess up the probe.
